Thank you to all of our families for supporting our schools. We are excited to be one of six elementary schools in Ohio to be chosen as a
Blue Ribbon School!
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  10/3-10/7
Reading
We are continuing to work on making inferences as we read. Students are evaluating poems and working through their novels to make inferences. We will be having an assessment Friday, October 7th that will cover inference, character traits and setting. Every assessment will also cover determining the meaning of words.

I also introduced students to Time For Kids. This is nonfiction magazine that informs students of current events around the world. In class we will be learning about important issues, answering questions and taking a quiz throughout the year using TFK.

Yesterday, your child brought home a Diorama Project. They should choose a book that they have read this quarter. They are to choose a setting from the book and create a descriptive scene in their diorama. I encourage your child to use materials around the house to create their diorama. Please also keep in mind, that this is your child’s project. :) I also passed out note cards to each student today, to help them write their speech. Students will present a 30-60 second sharing of their diorama and book. Please see the green paper that came home for specific details. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at gvoinovich@aurora-schools.org.

Your child may work on their diorama in place of their 20 minutes of reading this week.
Writing
This week was an amazing week in Writing Workshop! Students are creating bold beginnings to hook their readers into the story. They are developing descriptive sentences and  thinking about their audience. Students also worked with their writing partners to T.A.G. each other. T -Tell something you like about their writing
A -Ask a question to help guide their writing
G -Give a suggestion to help guide their writing
Next week, we will work on exciting endings and create a final copy of their writing.
Word Study
Unit 3 skill will focus long vowel pattern in 1st or 2nd syllable. We are sorting and working with these words in class. Next week your child will bring home a practice page from their workbook. This page will contain the long vowel 1st syllable and long vowel 2nd syllable pattern.

Students are to complete 2 activities using their Fry words. This assignment is due Wednesday, October 5th.

Students will be tested on their Fry and feature words on Thursday, October 6th.

Students will have a summative assessment of their 25 Fry Words on Tuesday, October 11th.
Flynn Math
We started our multiplication/division unit in math. Instead of teaching each as a silo, students will get the experience of learning about both concepts at the same time in order to make connections. We are focusing on the following math vocabulary words that you could review at home to support the learning in the classroom:

prime - Numbers that only have 2 factors, 1 and itself. Examples: 2, 3, 5
composite - Numbers that have more than 2 factors. Examples: 6, 8, 10
factor- The number you multiply together
factor pair - the numbers you multiply together
product - the answer to a multiplication problem
difference - the answer to a subtraction problem
sum - the answer to an addition problem
quotient - the answer to a division problem
dividend - the number you are breaking apart
divisor - the number of groups in a division problem

Mrs. Gagel and I have a Google Classroom set up in which students have access. We will be using the Classroom for online assignments, blogging about math, etc. They can access the Google Classroom by clicking on the link on my blog or going to: classroom.google.com. Students can sign in from there with their Aurora Schools gmail account. I will be posting the paper/pencil hw there so that if the hard copy gets lost, they can access it. Also, Mrs. Gagel has expressed that if your child is struggling with a math skill, then the Math Flynn HW could be used as an optional assignment for additional skill practice.

HW for Flynn Math is due: Friday, 10/7 - These are review skills from end of 3rd grade to beginning of 4th.
Content Areas
Science - We began the unit, Changes in the Earth’s Surface,  with an experiment building sand castles out of sand, glue, and water. We also changed the variables by using different measurements of glue and water. Next week, we will model the forces of nature to see which castle was more resistant to weathering and erosion. Additionally, we are creating vocabulary cards throughout the unit to prepare and study for the test. Also, we will learn about the many landforms of the Grand Canyon and how it was constructed. If you have any pictures of landforms from vacations, please send them in!
