Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  9/19-2/23
Reading
I am enjoying meeting with students during our reading conferences. During our reading conference time, your child and I are discussing the book they are reading and the skill we are working on in class. This past week, students completed an activity using their independent reading book, and all of the “Reading is Thinking” skills we have learned about so far. Next week, we will focus on character traits as we conference.

As a whole group we are learning that character's traits are inferred through a character’s actions and dialogue. We will be using more poems, stories, and videos to describe the character’s traits. We will also learn more about the setting of a story. Students will be tested on these skills on Thursday, September 22nd.

Your child’s nightly reading homework is to read at least 20 minutes each night.
Writing
We read Owl Moon by Jane Yolen to help us focus on using sensory details as we write. We will be using our sense of hearing, smelling, touching, seeing, and tasting to help us become more detailed with our writing. We will also be learning how to hook the reader in as we write introductions.

Each week students are working on their editing skills by fixing up sentences. We have learned the proper editing marks and will be using them as we edit in our writing as well.
Word Study
Unit 2 skill has us focusing on adding suffixes to words with -ing and -ed. We are sorting and working with these words in class.

Students are to complete 2 activities using their Fry words (see list that comes home). This assignment is due Wednesday, September 21st.

Students will be tested on their Fry and feature words on Thursday, September 22nd.
Flynn Math
We are wrapping up addition, subtraction, and place value concepts. We will be taking an addition quiz on Wednesday, Sept. 21. I have attached a study guide to this email to help your child prepare. We will continue to work on these concepts throughout the year. We are beginning the multiplication unit with a pre assessment. This will not go in the gradebook, but allows me to see where I need to begin instruction. Skip counting is valuable at home to go deeper into multiplication and division. However, while your child is skip counting, ask them what fact goes with the multiple. Also, ask them questions such as:

*What is 6 times as much as 7?
*If you landed on the multiple of 20, how many groups of 5 is that?
*Skip count by the more difficult numbers (4, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc.)

In lieu of Xtramath, students can now utilize Reflex Math. Students brought login information home yesterday in their take-home folders. Their passwords are stapled into their planners. Xtramath is still available too. Sumdog does not focus on math fact automaticity unless students are playing the game Tables.

HW for Flynn Math is due: Tomorrow, 9/16. There will be a new math hw passed out tomorrow due the following week on 9/23.
Content Areas
S.S. – We are wrapping up map skills with a quiz next Tuesday, 9/20. Please see the study guide attached. Students will only be assessed over the meanings of the words. We will then move into prehistoric and historic indians.

We do have enough technology here in case your child does not or is not permitted to bring a device. Also, please make sure your child charges them at home. Thank you for your support!
