Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  10/24-28
Reading
This past week we discussed cause and effect. Students watch a video, read passages, and task cards to determine the cause and effect. We focused on the cause being the reason for the action, reason, or the event. The effect is what happened as a result of the cause. Students are also going back into their literature books to find causes and effects! You should start to see lots of sticky notes in their books that show their thinking.

Next week we will do a review of the concepts we have learned so far. A summative test will be given Wednesday, October 26th.

We will then move into context clues, main idea and details using informational texts.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
Students final personal narratives pieces will be shared with you at conferences. If we have met for a conference already, the writing came home in their report cards.

This quarter we are working on informational writing. Students have brainstormed topics they are experts in and have chosen one topic to focus on for their first piece. We discussed the differences between a personal narrative and informational writing in class. We are working on organizing our ideas into subtopics. Next, week we will focus on creating a main idea and details for each paragraph.
Word Study
Last Monday I sent out an email explaining word study and/or vocabulary homework. Please email me at gvoinovich@aurora-schools.org if you have any questions.

We are focusing on long vowels in the first and second syllables using the vowel pair ai, ea, ee.

Word Study Homework: Due Wednesday, October 26th
Vocabulary Homework: Due Thursday, October 27th
Word Study Test: Thursday, October 27th
Flynn Math
I have been so impressed with the critical thinking that has been going on in math class lately. This week, during our conceptual time, students began to break down logic problems by using algebraic language. Students are realizing that almost any problem can be solved by using algebraic equations. We will continue to work on this throughout the school year. In addition, we have been wrapping up Unit 1 multiplication and division unit with measurement activities. Ask your child about Gallon Guy and measuring their strides in meters down the hall. This week, we will be working on the power of Base 10, and meatier multiplication and division concepts.

Homework this week: Please play the “Products of 4” Game (a record sheet will be coming home today and your child has played in class) with an adult and complete 3 days of Sumdog (about 15-20 minutes).
HW for Flynn Math is due: Friday, Oct. 28th.
Content Areas
Science - We wrapped up the Grand Canyon discussions with a Skype visit with a helicopter pilot who flew over the Grand Canyon giving tours. We now having been discussing other natural disasters such as volcanoes and earthquakes and how they change the Earth’s surface. If you have any expertise in these areas, we would love for you to chat or Skype with the class. Finally, because the nature of the science vocabulary words tend to be challenging, I introduced the “Lincs” vocabulary activity to students. It uses mnemonics to help them understand the definitions. Lincs can be used for any vocabulary development. Examples will be coming home in your child’s take-home folder.

We will be taking the Changes in the Earth summative on Tuesday, November 1st. Study guide will be going home early this week.
