December 2, 2016

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Over the next few weeks, in correlation to our social studies standards, we will be discussing cultural practices including holiday celebrations of several different countries such as England, Germany, France, Ireland, etc. If you have any cultural background you would like to share with the class, please email me and I can work out a time for you to come.
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  12/5 - 12/9
Reading
This past week we have been digging into nonfiction text to determine the structure of books, articles, and passages. Students are describing the overall texture of the text or part of the text. We are also using graphic organizers to help us determine if the author organized the text by giving a description, sequencing, compare/contrast, cause/effect, or problem/solution. We have had interesting conversations about why an author chooses the structure of the text and finding evidence. We have also discussed that understanding the text structure helps us summarize what we read. We will continue to investigate more about text structure next week and take a quiz on this skill.

I have been meeting with your child to conference with them one on one about the books they are reading. They are also creating a goal each week for what book they want to read and the amount of pages to be read each week. Please talk with your child about their reading goal. I will check in with them each week to see if they met their goal and create a new goal for the upcoming week. Setting weekly reading goals is a helpful way to keep your child reading nightly and reaching their 30 Book Challenge!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
We have started brainstorming three main ideas for students nonfiction book. Students are expected to have at least 3 chapters in their nonfiction book they are writing. They will have details and supporting details for each main idea. Student will also be creating text features (throughout the book such as illustrations, glossary, diagrams, timelines). Students will also write an “About the Author” page. Please have them bring in a picture of himself/herself for this page.
Word Study
We are focusing on the au,aw,al pattern in accented syllables.

Word Study Homework: Due Monday, 12/7
Vocabulary Homework: Due Tuesday, 12/8
Word Study Test: Tuesday, 12/8 ; Students will also take a post assessment test on the Fry words for quarter 2 before the end of the grading period.

We are wrapping up the multiplication and early division strategies unit this week. The students took a pre-assessment before we started the unit and I will be passing those back to review and use as a study guide the for the math test coming up on Tuesday, Dec. 13th. Students will be able to take their pre-assessments home next week to use as a study guide for home reference as it will be a good reflection of the skills posed on the summative. Everyone is getting a math review for homework next week reflecting skills we have been working on. Please let me know if you want extra practice for your child especially with 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication practice. This unit has been a smooth transition into understanding fractions and decimals. Students are already making connections such as understanding that the quotient in division is related to a fraction.

Homework Due: Friday, Dec. 9th.
Content Areas
Health- Friendship and conflict resolution have been our main health concepts this week. Students are creating a friendship book for themselves which will be passed around the room for all peers to sign. This will prove an example of how valuable a friend they are and will show the importance of self-confidence and concept.

Social Studies - Next week we will go back to social studies and learn about the historic indians. Students will become experts on one historic indian group, take notes, research, and create a product to share out with the class. In lieu of a summative over historic indians, the product will be the grade.
