Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  3/20-3/24
Reading
This week students will read a firsthand and secondhand account about Ruby Bridges. She is known for being the first African-American child to desegregate an all white school in Louisiana. We will also be reading accounts about shark accounts, the mayflower, and many more. Students will be finding events that compare and contrast the points of view. Students will be tested on this skill this Thursday, March 23rd.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night. Enjoy a good book over spring break!
Writing
Students will be finalizing their persuasive paragraphs this week. Later in the week, we will discuss our research immigration project. In social studies, students will be learning about different cultures and the reasons why many immigrants left their country and came to America. Students will have a chance to research their own culture or one of their choice. We will be researching about their culture and what contributions they made to Ohio and the United States. Students will learn how to take their research and write it into a formal research piece, making note of the sources. We have already purchased tri-fold poster boards for the students to organize their research with pictures. Students will present their projects the afternoon of Wednesday, May 17th. We would love for your family to join us. This project will be done in class. More information to come.
Word Study
Students took a pretest on Friday. If they missed more than 2 words, they should complete the word study homework for 4th quarter.
Fry and Skill words came home on Friday.
Homework due: Wednesday, April 5, 2017
Test: Thursday, April 6, 2017

Students that missed less than 2 words on their pretest will complete vocabulary homework. Vocabulary homework will come home Monday, March 20th.  This will look different throughout 4th quarter:)
Homework due: Thursday, April 6, 2017
Math

Ever wonder what is in those yummy Shamrock shakes at McDonalds? The students analyzed nutrition data and discovered some interesting numbers like 82 grams of sugar in a 16 oz shake. They had fun while they compared a meal to daily values.

Students continue to work hard on geometry concepts. This week we looked at patterns of symmetry in nature and tied them to our polygon shapes.

Students are allowed to use the following reference page on the AIR Math test. It is always a good idea to review it at home as well.

1 yard = 3 feet.
1 pound = 16 ounces.
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces.
1 foot = 12 inches.
1 pint = 2 cups.
1 quart = 2 pints.

Homework Due: No Homework!
Content Areas
SS
Students are studying how when humans modify the environment positive and negative consequences result. For example, when building highways, animal habitats are destroyed, but at the same time it provides a faster way to travel.

We will also begin understanding government and economics.
