We enjoyed our visit to Miller to read to the kindergartners! Check out the pictures below!
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  3/13-3/17
Reading
We are learning about firsthand and secondhand accounts with nonfiction texts. Students have learned about accounts from a titanic survivor and a storm chaser! Next week, we will be digging deeper into comparing the accounts. We also did another practice AIR test and discussed each question and reading strategies to help them determine their answers.

Students are also enjoying their independent reading books! We are meeting in conferences and discussing reading strategies as they are reading. It is wonderful to have one on one conversations with each student about what they are thinking as they read!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
Students have decided on the inventions they want to design and persuade others to buy! They are working hard on their introductory paragraphs. Next week, we will dive into the  their reasons and work on persuading others to buy their invention.
Word Study
Fourth quarter Fry words will be sent home next Friday. A pre-test will be taken next week.

Vocabulary Homework: No Homework
Math
Students are working hard constructing and measuring angles with protractors. Students are also exploring parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines.

Most importantly, we discussed how math is the study of patterns. Patterns are everywhere around us. Math evolved out of patterns in nature specifically. We read the book “Sir cumference and the Round Table” to discuss geometric patterns found in nature.

Students are allowed to use the following reference page on the AIR Math test. It is always a good idea to review it at home as well.

1 yard = 3 feet.
1 pound = 16 ounces.
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces.
1 foot = 12 inches.
1 pint = 2 cups.
1 quart = 2 pints.

Homework Due: No Homework!
Content Areas
SS
Students did a great job focusing on their science tests. Results will be back next week. We will be studying social studies for a while now. Our topics of focus for the next few weeks will be transportation, government, and economics.

We are also learning about the Civil War and slavery through our read aloud book, F is for Freedom. Students are putting themselves in the shoes of slaves and writing a historical narrative based on what life would be like as a runaway slave. Ask your child about how they escaped to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

Testing Information:
*Your child will need working headphones/earbuds.
Students this year are tested in the following subjects:  Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies.  Each test will be two parts.  Please make note of these dates, and make every attempt to ensure your child is in attendance first thing in the morning of each scheduled test day.  Students who arrive after 9:05 will not be allowed into the classrooms.  Students who are absent will have to miss instructional time on other days in order to make up any missed tests.  Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
