Mr. LaPorte is inviting all students to his “Brain Booster” sessions on the days 4th graders have AIR testing. Research has shown that physical activity enhances children's concentration and learning. A letter was sent home yesterday and is also attached to the email from today.
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  3/6 - 3/10
Reading
The students had a fun week with our Read Across America activities. Unfortunately, with the extreme weather today, we had to cancel our visit to Miller. We will let you know when we reschedule for another day.

This Tuesday, March 7th students will have an assessment on comparing and contrasting the theme, topics, and events in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.  We have been reading about different myths such as “Thor’s Mighty Hammer” and “Perseus and Medusa.” Students are enjoying the different types of folklore!  We also are exploring through books from the library about different folktales.

We also did a practice AIR test with the Chromebooks. The students had a chance to investigate the different options the test has to offer. We are always discussing test taking strategies how to reading closely. The students did a great job maneuvering through the test.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
This week we discussed the top inventions of 2016 in our Time for Kids magazine. We learned how these inventions benefited others. Mrs. Flynn shared with us many of the inventions and inventors from Ohio! We are now brainstorming as a class problems that affect our community and what we can invent to solve this problem. We will be connecting these ideas with Mrs. Kinkoph in media. She will be guiding the student into making prototypes and commercials for their invention.
Word Study
We have finished our word study units for this quarter. There will be a final post assessment of our Fry words. A review of the words is coming home today (Friday 3/3)

Word Study Homework: No homework to be turned in. Study for test.
Word Study Test: Friday, March 10, 2017

Vocabulary Homework: No Homework
Math
Students completed a reflection sheet for their fraction/decimal test. Please take time at home to review what they did well and their  errors. It was a good learning experience for them to understand their strengths and what they could have improved upon.

We are continuing our geometry study this week. We learned about 5 different angle types: straight = 180 degrees, zero = zero degrees, acute = less than 90 degrees, right = 90 degrees, and an obtuse = more than 90 degrees. We also discussed how we can use the right angle as a benchmark angle to figure out other angle degrees.

Looking for a fun way to include NUMBER SENSE into your daily lives with your child? This site provides quick easy ways for kids to think critically.

Students are allowed to use the following reference page on the AIR Math test. It is always a good idea to review it at home as well.

1 yard = 3 feet.
1 pound = 16 ounces.
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces.
1 foot = 12 inches.
1 pint = 2 cups.
1 quart = 2 pints.

Science
Students have been working hard to wrap up Ecosystems. They are getting a study guide for homework to prepare for their test on Friday, March 10th. We also created notecards students have been using in class to help them understand content words. Please have your child complete the study guide and review Ch. 4 in their science books to help them study.
Ecosystem Study Guide Due: Thursday, March 9th.
