                                                      So many amazing pop bottles!

Read Across America Week is fast approaching! We have fun activities planned for next week. On Monday, students should wear a shirt that can be read. Please check your child’s take-home folders for the list of activities for each day. Now is also a great time to check out a new book from the library! Many of our local libraries have fantastic activities as well. Check them out! Also, a special thank you to Mr. Roberto and Mrs. Miller for supplying the language arts teachers with many new books for our classroom libraries!

Reading
We are looking forward to celebrating Read Across America Week! We will have the chance to team up with Mrs. Gallucci and Mrs. Haughey’s class. Our students will be reading their favorite Dr. Seuss book to the kindergartens. If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home that your child could bring in, please send in by Thursday. If not, I have many books they could borrow.

We are continuing our skill of comparing and contrasting the theme, topics, and events in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures. This past week we discussed the different elements of each kind of folk tale. We will be comparing and contrasting different literature the rest of the week. Students will take a test on this skill at the end of the week or beginning of next week.

The students did an amazing job on their speeches and projects! While students were listening in the audience to each speech, they wrote a compliment, a suggestion on how to improve, and what they learned. Students really took their time creating their projects and preparing their speeches. They should be proud of their hard work!  Check out the pop bottles on display in the picture above. The poster boards were also a success. I will post those pics next week!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
Final writing persuasive pieces will be completed this week. This week we will also be reading about the top inventions of 2016. Students will be persuading their audience to buy their favorite invention of 2016.

Students did a great job preparing for their fraction/decimal assessment. Grades will go home next week. We are continuing to work on geometry and measurement skills. Students will gain more experience with measurement conversions, protractors, and different kinds of angles.  Also, we will revisit multiplication and division strategies.

Students are allowed to use the following reference page on the AIR Math test. It is always a good idea to review it at home as well.

1 yard = 3 feet.
1 pound = 16 ounces.
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces.
1 foot = 12 inches.
1 pint = 2 cups.
1 quart = 2 pints.

Social Studies/Science -
Wow, with the warm weather our pop bottle ecosystems sprouted! Due to the beautiful weather, we were able to get outside during science twice this week for nature walks! This week we will be more focused on food chains and webs and how to construct them.

In social studies, we started looking at transportation by viewing a video on how canal locks work!

Testing Information:
*Your child will need working headphones/earbuds.
