February 20, 2017

Thank you to Mrs. Hanson, Mrs. Duguay, and Mrs. Phillips who helped organized a great Valentine's Day party! Scroll down for more pictures!

We have received compliments from 2 Aurora residents about the Valentines left at Heinens and Starbucks! One lady commented that the one she found was the only one she received that day.
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  2/21-2/24
Reading
This week students will start to compare and contrast the theme, topics, and events in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.

Have your child practice their speech at home. Their speech does not have to be memorized, but students should feel comfortable presenting. They can earn bonus bucks when they turn in the speech log that was in their biography packet or just send me a note that they practiced their speech. Students may write their speech on the paper provided, on notecards, or they can type it. I will collect their notes and speech on February 23rd.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Biography notes, speech, and project due February 23rd
Writing
Students are revising and editing their writing. They are meeting with their partners to T.A.G. them. T.A.G. stands for Telling a compliment, Asking a question about their writing, and Giving advice on the piece.  Students will type their final copies. We will be sending their persuasive letters out and hopefully receive a response for many letters. :)

Math
This week we continued talking about fractions and decimals.  One skill we focused on was comparing two decimals.  Some students shared that they use money to help them. We can think about $1 as our whole. We talked about tenths (0.1 or 1/10) as dimes and hundredths (0.01 or 1/100) as pennies. So for example if I want to know which is larger 1.2 or 1.02, I could think about the value if it were money. I know 1.2 is the same as 1.20 and $1.20 is more than $1.02--therefore 1.2 is larger.  We also talked about adding fractions (tenths and hundredths) and how before we can add we have to find a common denominator.

On Tuesday, we will be doing a review of fractions and decimals. Please have your child bring their own device if possible. We will have district devices available too if your child can not.

Homework Due: No homework this week, Math test on Wednesday!
Content Areas
Social Studies/Science -
Students have been observing their pop bottle ecosystems carefully and recording the results. So far we have noticed that the groups who left out sand or gravel have a bean sprout already. We also did an experiment on decomposing bananas. We put ½ of a banana in a bag as the control and the other ½ with yeast in a separate bag. We are watching to see which banana decomposes faster. Due to the warm temperatures, we will be able to take a nature walk outside and search for producers, consumers, and decomposers.

In SS, we finished up discussing the War of 1812. Next, we will begin reflecting on advancements in transportation.

Testing Information:
*Your child will need working headphones/earbuds.
Ohio Online Practice Test: http://oh.portal.airast.org/ocba/
We are using the above site in class to prepare students on how to use the tools given on the state test such as the masking features, drag and drop, etc. It is a good idea to do this at home to increase familiarity.

www.typingclub.com is a great site to assist students with their typing skills.

Hockey Night
Geauga Youth Hockey Association and The Pond ice rink are hosting a free event to help area children see what hockey is like completely free of charge.
