We are excited for our Valentine's Day party tomorrow. Thank you to the parent volunteers! We are continuing friendship month next week with Random Acts of Kindness. We will be writing kind notes and leaving them anonymously around Aurora.
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  2/13-2/16
Reading
As we are comparing and contrasting two different texts, we read about the discovery of potato chips and french fries. We discovered a “recipe” to help us with writing about the topic we are reading about: 1. We must determine the main idea between both texts.
2. Compare/contrast the two texts.
3. Determine the point of view
4. Think about the author’s perspective. What is his/her attitude about the topic?
This recipe will help as we write to combine what we learned from 2 texts.
*Students will be tested on this skill on Thursday, February 16th.*

Students are doing a great job working on their biographies! I had a chance to sit with each student to review their notes and discuss any questions they had. Students may write their speech on the paper provided, on notecards, or they can type it. I will collect their notes and speech on February 23rd.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Biography notes, speech, and project due February 23rd
Writing
Students are deep into their writing! We are learning about using opinion transitions for stating their opinion (In my opinion, I believe), when providing reasons (To begin with, Most importantly), providing examples/details (For instance, Specifically), and coming to a conclusion (All in all, To sum it up). We are also focused on using persuasive language such as: you should, must, need to. Next week, we will continue working on their body paragraphs and conclusion paragraphs.

Ohio Online Practice Test: http://oh.portal.airast.org/ocba/
We are using the above site in class to prepare students on how to use the tools given on the state test such as the masking features, drag and drop, etc. It is a good idea to do this at home to increase familiarity.

www.typingclub.com is a great site to assist students with their typing skills.

Steak n Strings
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then here is the solution.  The Aurora Orchestra Association is hosting its 4th annual Steak N Strings Event on Saturday, Feb. 27th at 6:00 PM in the Aurora High School Varsity Gym.  Outback Steakhouse of Macedonia will be cooking the food fresh on the grill here at AHS.  For $20, you get a 9 oz steak (or Salmon), baked potato, salad, drinks and cheesecake dessert.  This is less than what you would spend in the restaurant when you add in the dessert, drinks and tip.  The best part is that proceeds go to benefit the orchestra students here in Aurora.  Not sure what to do with your kids?  Bring them.  The children's meal includes drinks, chicken fingers and fries and only costs $5!  Sit and relax at your table while the AHS Orchestras perform music from Disney's Aladdin and Pirates of the Caribbean (plus much more) all while the food is served to you at your table.

Ticket order forms are due this Saturday, Feb. 13th.  You can order online at
Attached more info. in email.
