Happy New Year! We started the year by creating academic goals for the 2nd half of 4th grade! This is a great time at home to discuss goals around the house as well. A fresh and brand new start!
Subject
Learning Targets and Activities for week of:  1/9-1/13
Reading
We are continuing our learning on poems, prose (stories), and plays (dramas). Students made a flip book about the different elements of each. We also read the poem, A Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. We not only talked about the elements of each, but the meaning of the poem as well.  This week we will perform the play,” I Have a Dream,” in small groups and for other classes! Students will be tested on the different elements on Thursday, January 12th. Students are bringing home a flip book to help them review.

Congratulations on all of our hot chocolate reading challenge readers! We enjoyed our tasty treat!

Students will be receiving a biography book project this Friday. It will be due February 23rd. More details to come!:)

Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night.
Writing
Students did an amazing job on their informational books. They are placing them on display for other classmates to read and enjoy.

This quarter we will be working on persuasive writing. Students will be writing their opinion in different forms such as advertisements, letters, articles, speech, reviews, and formal writing pieces. We are learning  the elements of a persuasive text-audience, issue, and evidence.
Word Study
Word Study Skill: /or/ in the 1st and 2nd syllable

Word Study HW: Due Wednesday, January 18th
Word Study Test: Thursday, January 19th

Vocabulary Homework: Due Thursday, January 19th
Math
In math, we started exploring with cuisenaire rods to understand fractions. Students had great connections. They came to a very important realization that the unit or whole can change. Therefore, what is ½ of one whole isn’t the same size of a half for a different whole. We compared pizza places. If we ordered a medium sized pizza at one shop, a different shop would most likely have a different sized medium. We will continue our study of fractions over the next few weeks. We will study equivalency, adding and subtracting using like denominators, ordering and comparing fractions, and more.

Additionally, I’m sending home a game titled “Division Capture”. It can played in place of other fluency activities at home such as Xtramath. Students can earn bonus bucks for turning in any of the record sheets.

If interested, take a look at the video link on fractions. It will help with understanding of how kids learn and progress in fractions.

Homework Due: Friday, 1/13

Social Studies -
Students began our unit about the struggles over the Ohio land by answering the question on Google Classroom: If there was just conflict, and no cooperation, would we have freedom? Student responses were fascinating. They can log on to Google Classroom at home if you would like to see! If you want to learn more about what we are studying in class, ask your child to bring home their social studies book. The information is located in Ch. 3.
